About SMC

History

The SMC Road Race Series was originally based on a New Zealand concept of training for distance running, particularly marathons, in groups. In 1978, a group of runners from Sydney visited New Zealand to run in the Hamilton Marathon.

After the marathon, three members of the group went on a tour and were impressed by the Kiwi’s approach to training for such events. When they returned home, they decided to establish a club based on what they had learned there.

The Club

The aim of SMC is to promote running for runners of all levels and abilities.  We aim to help runners to train to a level where they can run events such as marathons, half marathons, 10km races, 5km races, City 2 Surf, and a whole range of other events. Each month, SMC offers runners the opportunity to take advantage of our accurate, timed, running events.

Sometimes it is hard to train by yourself or to go on a long run on your own.  In a group, we can enjoy each other’s company and we can run further and faster and challenge ourselves.

Running in a group is more fun than running alone.  During and after these runs we share running and training tips as well as things like diet, upcoming races, gear and all the other things that runners love to talk about.

Yarns and anecdotes, as well as new members, are always welcome and experienced runners are only too happy to help out newcomers with advice.

Membership

Membership

You do not need to be a member to run at SMC.  You can just register, turn up and run if you like! However SMC is a running club and we hope you want to be a part of it.

Your $25 Membership includes the following benefits:

  • At each race you attend, you will automatically be entered into a members-only raffle with cash prizes (new in 2024/25).
  • You will be offered a discounted rate for SMC awards night dinner ticket.
  • If you compete in all 9 runs in the same series, you will receive a commemorative “I did the flaming lot” t-shirt.  ‘Same series’ meaning all nine long runs, all nine 10km runs, or all nine 5km runs.

Perhaps the most important benefit is that you’ll become a member of a running club which has been established for over 30 years.

Please note that membership may only be purchased up until the 6th race in the season.  Once the registrations shut for race 6, so will the option to become an SMC member.  So don’t leave it too late!

Volunteer

SMC is run entirely by volunteers, without whom SMC would not exist.

You can help out by volunteering either before, during, or after the event. Remember; you can still run if you volunteer.  Volunteering is giving something back, and most people who help out find a rewarding experience.  If you’re injured you could come and help out on a drink station.  You’ll get a warm fuzzy feeling inside knowing you’re part of SMC and helping your fellow runners out.

Each time you volunteer, get your name recorded in the volunteer roster for that month.  You will then receive one entry into the end of season draw to win $50 cash.  So the more times you help out, the more chance you have of winning! There will be a total of three $50 cash prizes for the season.

If you volunteer, but do not run, we will give you one SMC awards night dinner ticket at the end of the season.  That is an estimated $50 value.  A maximum of one ticket will be given per person.

If you or a family member can help out in any way, please email us. We really appreciate all the help we get. Thanks!
